USA - economic system
Day 27 Face February Fighting
USA
Economic system?

CAPITALISM!!!!
(making money!)
How does it influence sport?
Win at all costs mentality - Lombardianism
Sport is a media product - so needs to be exciting/High scoring.
If capitalism is about making money so sport must be profit making, players have chance for American Dream of rags to riches.
Teams are run as businesses as franchises.

Traditional Amateur Approach to sport in UK
Day 23 Face February Fighting
Traditional Apporach - amateur (l'amour)
Taking part more important than winning - for the love of the game.
Old system was disorganised and lack of communication. Also ineffective
SO........it had to change into a more modern approach!!!
Modern Approach - winning/competitive/professional
Results driven basis!!!
NGB's need to modernise to get results and therefore keep their funding from UK sport.
Got to raise standards and compete on the world stage
WAT - none today, foot hurts from hockey ball yesterday in the defeat #watsonisawimp

Background of the modern Olympics
Day 13 of Face February Fighting
Modern Olympics over 100 years old......
Baron Pierre de Coubertain was the founder of the modern Olympic movement.
He wanted to promote friendship and unity through sport.
He visited the Public Schools of England (Rugby school) and was impressed with what he saw.
He also visited the Cotswold Games and the Dover Games.
Also the Much Wenlock Olympics with Dr Penny Brookes.
First Olympics in Athens 1896 and were strictly amateur

Sportsmanship/Gamesmanship/
Day 8 of “Face February Fighting”
Lets use the KISS principle.
Keep It Simple Sausage
Sportsmanship
Fair play - playing to the written and unwritten rules.
(todays hockey match - putting your hand up when it hits your foot)
Gamesmanship
Bending the rules to gain an unfair advantage
(todays hockey match - me running in a way that meant some poor soul bounced off me!!)
WAT - 70mins. Lost 3-1 gutted!!!

Recreation
Outdoor recreation Colin Mortlock quote “The natural environment might be up a mountain, or down a river, across an ocean or along a coastline, across the wilderness or along the outdoor way, through the air or under the surface of the earth”
He explained the potential of outdoor rec as “The following journeys providing you take any of them to the outer limits of your capabilities in a self-reliant manner, can take you along the road to truth and beauty, freedom and happiness

Drugs in Sport
Reasons???
To build muscle
To mask injury
To train harder
To control arousal
Pressure to win from coaches

Low chance of being caught
Consequences!!!

Lose medals/titles and prize money
